Birds and Building

Ellis.tower.99
The tower of one of the buildings at Ellis Island in New York. The nearly invisible birds in the upper left go with the reflections on the tower from the water around the island.

Still in a Class Alone

ESB
Between the signs and the other buildings is still the iconic building of New York City- the Empire State Building. It's class has never been outdone.

Bridge Lines

BrooklynBridge, 1983
Lines and more lines holding up the Brooklyn Bridge. I wish it were sharper, but it is a scan from a slide. Maybe someday I'll get a chance to be there again.

Subway Music

Trumpet in Subway, 1993
One of the neat things in the NYC subways has been the musicians. This guy was good- and yes, I did put money in his trumpet case for taking this picture.

Remember...

WTC from Empire State Bldg, 1993
The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in a slide taken from the Empire State Building at sunset in 1993. Liberty Island and the Statue are barely visible in the center of the picture.

Lines - and Birds

Birds.Skyline.99
I seem to find those lines even when I'm taking bird pictures. This is looking from Liberty Island toward the New Jersey side of the river.

Window, Lines and People

Ellis.window.99
A window like this with people in front is almost irresistible. A little editing in Paint Shop Pro brought out some color and some of the background lost in the backlighting. From Ellis Island, New York.

Downtown and the Towers

NYC.downtown.99
From the Empire State Building looking downtown just after sunset. Broadway and 8th Ave (I think) can be seen by the traffic.

Oldie, But Goodie

RCA.1955
No, I didn't take this picture. My dad did. That's me in the middle between my mother and my younger (and only) brother. This is at Rockefeller Center in New York City and was taken in 1955 (I think.) I do know that there were only 48 stars on that flag in the background. I just like the way this picture looks and wanted to share it.
Scanned from slide.

Hopeful Stares

Liberty2

As the boat approached Liberty Island, I was struck by the fact that this very same view has been seen for so many, many years by so many, many people. Most of those in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries were filled with hope. They would stare, I am sure, unable to believe that they had made it. The land of the free and the home of the brave.

Inside Liberty

Inside The Statue

I don't know whether you can do this anymore or not in this post-9/11 world. But back in 1993 we could take this long hike up the Statue of Liberty and get this view of the structure inside. This is scanned from a 35mm slide. It continues the theme of lines and angles that shows up from time to time around here.

Ellis Island, Boats, and Lady Liberty

LibertyIsland
The view is from the New Jersey shore waiting to get on the boat to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. It was here that many of our ancestors first set foot on American soil.
What a place of history.

A Transparent Building

Transparent Building?
This is one of the buildings right behind Ground Zero in New York City. It almost looks like you can see through it to the clouds on the other side.

Lines and Reflections

LinesAndReflection2
New York has more interesting angles and places to take pictures. Like this one in Times Square. I love following lines of sight and seeing reflections. But there's always something that makes it stand out- like the lamp post on the left. It appeard out of place- yet fits. The wonders of NYC.

Rough and Ready

TeddyRooseveltPassenger
Good old TR so proudly riding in front of the Museum of Natural History in New York City. Isn't it strange, though, that we erect these statues and monuments to honor our great heroes well aware of the fact that the mjor use will be by the birds?
