An Earlier Olympic Venue

Berlin '70 Olympic Flame from 1936
With the Olympics going on now, I thought I would show the site of the historic Berlin Games of 1936 with the Olympic flame still standing. It has been significantly renovated since I took this picture nearly 40 years ago.

Twenty Years Gone

Berlin '70 Brandenburg & Wall
Today is the 20th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. In honor of that great event here is a post of a portion of the wall at the Brandenburg Gate. The picture was taken from West Berlin.

Cold War Reality

Berlin '70 Checkpoint Charlie

Still Goose-Stepping in 1970

Berlin '70 Memorial in East
A German Memorial in what was then East Berlin under communist control. It was eerie to stand and watch soldiers goosestepping only 25 years after World War II.

Never Forget

Berlin '70 Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial
The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin. While a new church has been built since this 1970 picture, the ruins of the old church were left as a reminder of the horrors of war.

When Berlin Was Divided

Berlin '70 Soviet Memorial in West
The Soviet War Memorial in Berlin ended up on the West Berlin side of the Wall when it was built in 1960. I was there in 1970 and took this picture symbolic of the separation of that city.
