Oldie, But Goodie

No, I didn't take this picture. My dad did. That's me in the middle between my mother and my younger (and only) brother. This is at Rockefeller Center in New York City and was taken in 1955 (I think.) I do know that there were only 48 stars on that flag in the background. I just like the way this picture looks and wanted to share it.

Explosion of Colors

I have often been struck by the incredible color found in Native American art and dress. These vivid costumes were from the annual Pow Wow at the Shakopee, MN, Sioux community.

Fireworks and Parking Lots

It is odd to watch fireworks from a Home Depot parking lot. Yet, when it comes together with the little breeze blowing the streams and the parking lot lights acting like "bombs bursting in air" it does all kind of special.

A Sacred Place

The early Moravian community in Bethlehem, PA, felt strongly about the equality of all people in the community. (Mostly, anyway.) The tradition at the time was to have all people buried with only flat stones. The cemetery, known as God's Acre, was divided into sections (or choirs) men, women, children. There were no family plots. They were buried in order of their death. This picture shows two side-by-side graves. On the left is Bishop John Cammerhoff, one of the youngest Bishops ever elected. On the right is Tschoop, known as John, who was a Mohican Indian, the paradigm for The Last of the Mohicans. Equality, at least in death.

I have admired this flag motif at the Ellis Island Center in New York/New Jersey (whichever it is really in). Ellis Island is where so many of our ancestors entered the United States helping us become the great and diverse nation we are today.

Hopeful Stares

As the boat approached Liberty Island, I was struck by the fact that this very same view has been seen for so many, many years by so many, many people. Most of those in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries were filled with hope. They would stare, I am sure, unable to believe that they had made it. The land of the free and the home of the brave.
