Color in the Cemetery

The cemetery at Berea Moravian Church near St. Charles, MN, has color from the cemetery itself. Not as much an irony as one might think when you consider Christian theology.

All Saints & All Souls

Yesterday (Nov 1) was All Saints' Day. Today is All Souls' Day. We remember our families and friends who have gone on. This is the cemetery in my home town of Jersey Shore, PA, where many I remember were laid to rest.

A Sacred Place

The early Moravian community in Bethlehem, PA, felt strongly about the equality of all people in the community. (Mostly, anyway.) The tradition at the time was to have all people buried with only flat stones. The cemetery, known as God's Acre, was divided into sections (or choirs) men, women, children. There were no family plots. They were buried in order of their death. This picture shows two side-by-side graves. On the left is Bishop John Cammerhoff, one of the youngest Bishops ever elected. On the right is Tschoop, known as John, who was a Mohican Indian, the paradigm for The Last of the Mohicans. Equality, at least in death.
